Euthanasia

We would all love our pets to live forever or at least have very long healthy lives and die peacefully in their sleep. Unfortunately, this is not usually the case and we know there will come a time when we have to say goodbye. We may also have to decide if it would be kinder to consider euthanasia to prevent suffering. This is a very difficult and personal decision. Our team are here to help you through the decision process.

We always prefer the pet’s family to be present during the euthanasia, however if this is too difficult for you our team will makes sure your pet is gently supported and comforted through the process.

Euthanasia is preformed by first giving the patient a mild sedative to calm and relax them. While the medication is taking effect family can cuddle, soothe and say their final goodbyes. Once the patient is relaxed and sedate, an intravenous injection of an anesthetic overdose is slowly given. The patient then falls quickly asleep and their heart slowly stops. It is not painful or uncomfortable.

For the aftercare of our patients, we use the services of Gateway Pet Memorial. Gateway provides services including communal and individual cremations, viewing and visitation facilities, and a variety of memorial products. Grief counseling services are also available through Gateway Pet Memorial as you grieve the loss of your pet.
